Tool Development

Background:
Humans have been building shelters for thousands of years. From the bark and timber structures of Aboriginal societies to the palaces of ancient Rome, the type of housing in any particular place was driven by what worked in the local environment. In other words, climate, materials and available technology combined with generations of experience led to certain types of housing in different places. Think about the mud and thatch huts of rural Africa which are cheap and easy to build, cool in summer and last well.

However, over the last century in Australia, materials and energy have been getting cheaper and cheaper to the point where we really don’t have to bother thinking about all the things that people have been concerned with for thousands of years. It’s only since electricity and materials have started to become noticeably expensive recently that the message of home sustainability has become more main-stream.

Skillset and Green Homes Australia have gone back to the ancient wisdom and combined it with modern materials and technology to develop 38 principles that make a home sustainable. We’re not the only ones to be thinking about this either; the Federal Government site yourhome.gov.au, the Australian Institute of Architects “Environmental Design Guide” and many other organisations are ‘in this space’.

There are 2 things that make our approach special;

1. Our holistic view of what makes a good home. That is, we consider comfort, affordability and low environmental impact.

2. The way we have designed a web-based tool to take you through the 39 principles in a user-friendly journey.

There are plenty of resources on-line that will help you calculate how much carbon you might emit or that will tell you what thermal mass is – if you know who to trust and have the time to chase it up. The My Green Home Rating Tool brings the knowledge together into one place, providing you with a learning experience as you complete to tool and providing you with a detailed report to inspire you in where you could make changes. You can also call one of our Green Builders for personal advice.

Technical Info:
The MGHRT is a multiple choice quiz with a ‘back-end’ that analyses answers to questions around the 38 principles. Since some options rank better than others, the tool is able to provide a score for each section. Technical staff then compile a more detailed report based on the individual responses. If more still more detail is required our Green Builders are available for further conversation.

Green Homes Australia and Skillset are both based in Central NSW and have a combined 50 years’ experience in the building and construction industry. Green Homes Australia continue to build Award Winning homes and Skillset place and train hundreds of trade apprentices each year. GHA and Skillset have also developed a “Green Tick” business coaching program and are currently developing a Green Trade Training Program. Skillset has recently been responsible for construction of the $8 million Flannery Centre, a ‘world’s best practice’ green skills and sustainability training centre in Bathurst, NSW.
